Lipedema is thought to be a genetic disorder resulting in the abnormal accumulation of adipose tissue between the waist and ankles. It is much different than lymphedema which is the backup of fluid in an extremity because of in ineffective lymph system. Although they are different, they often occur together. Lymphedema is highly treatable by finding a lymphedema therapist who is certified in the proper techniques. Lipedema is not as easy to treat. Liposuction has been used but often results in triggering or worsening the condition of lymphedema as lymph vessels are sucked out along with the fat. Do a lot of research before you decide on any surgery for this condition.
