I am not female, but at age 61 I was diagnosed with osteopenia, or very low bone density and referred by my GP to an Endocrinologist. In thorough scans she determined that the earlier diagnosis was correct, started to put me on Fosamax and then decided to try for a year with 1200 extra ml of calcium and 400 Vitamin D. Now 14 months later WITHOUT THE FOSAMAX I am holding my own in one area and have improved in another. This may be something for your doctor to consider if you are not too advanced in deterioration. She also insisted on weight-bearing exercises to strengthen bones.
