Also injured my L5-S1 some years ago. The hernia was rubbing on my nerve tunnel causing sciatic nerve distress down the back of my leg. First took treatment of steroid shots into disc but they failed to shrink the hernia. Finally went for surgery where they cut off the hernia there by relieving the pressure on the nerves. All worked out OK. But understand that now this can be done Othescopically (less invasive)
