I am 52-years-old, have osteoporosis, and other bone problems, have had two major spinal surgeries for scoliosis, and am on Social Security Disability due to degeneration of the entire spinal condition. My previous doctor put me on Fosamax, which I took for over a year, but two of my most knowledgeable current doctors want me off it and both say that Fosamax damages the liver. I am in the process of trying to get documentation for this, but I trust them and immediately stopped it. I never felt it was harmless to begin with, and never felt good about taking it. I do not yet know what I might use to substitute with, although from these two doctors and several other sources I understand that when a person is not laying down new bone it is definitely a parathyroid problem. This is coming out as well-documented. Also, check for a low-functioning thyroid, called hypothyroidism, which I also have, and is a very common condition, much more common than you would think. The trick is to find a doctor who will take into consideration the entire symptoms, and not just look at the blood work -- which is notoriously inaccurate at diagnosing mild to moderate cases. Good luck! Rachel
